A Story of hope
An
exceptionally vivid account of a child’s journey through the care system. The voice of the child is clearly heard.
Mark’s intolerable pain, bewilderment, fear and insecurity are vividly recalled
as he remembers family breakdown, moves from foster-carers, rejection by adopters
and abuse within a children’s home. His
younger brother was with him through most of these traumas, and Mark carried
the additional responsibility for supporting and comforting him. Mark’s confusion, self-doubt and anger lead him
to become depressed and suicidal as a young adult. Eventually, a loving relationship with his wife, and years of
painful counseling enabled Mark to examine each “festering wound”, and to
begin the healing process. Gradually he
was able to remove “the protective brick wall” he had built around himself. This book is essential reading for social
workers, and those in allied professions. It reminds us once again how our
daily judgments and decisions impact upon children and young people. Mark’s progress also re-affirms the power of
counseling, and people’s ability to recover.
We highly recommend this book. -
